overcharging the “crime” is stupid. sweeping it under the rug is equally stupid.

I have nothing but scorn for those who wish to settle scientific disputes by political investigations with a threat of criminal charges.

Scorn and Disdain seasoned with Disgust and Anger.

On this issue I am not ‘reasonable.’ Politicians have nothing positive to bring to the process by which scientific truths are proven or discarded. Those who seek them out as allies in an intellectual dispute are dancing with the devil.

yes Ron My thoughts exactly WRT Mann and his dealings with Halpern inside the bush administration.

    This Halpern?
Jet Propulsion Laboratory: Earth Atmospheric Sciences: David Halpern

And you are calling Halpern a politician because he held a position in the Office of Science and Technology Policy?

If you are serious in calling Halpern a politician, I think you need a bit of a definitional adjustment.

And if you are tying to draw an equivalence between “Congressional investigations and criminal prosecutions” to “providing clarifying information about a published paper”, you need your proportionality scales rebalanced.

You are welcome to your thoughts, Steve, but I am not joining the witch hunt.

hehe Ron, I knew you would try that line. You have scorn for politicians. I agree. I have scorn for members of the executive branch. Politicians, their appointees, none of them have any business in this:

“administration officials have nothing positive to bring to the process by which scientific truths are proven or discarded. Those who seek them out as allies in an intellectual dispute are dancing with the devil.”

Take a look at the mail

Don’t you find this a bit odd? you’ll have to read a bunch of mails to get it.

Now, of course there is no comparison between a criminal investigation and congressional investigations. And there is no comparision with Mann’s suggestion that they keep a file on certain editors so that they can have them removed.

Witch hunts come in many flavors. from the criminal to the petty.

Here’s a thought. Since you post code and stuff, I’ll keep my comments to those posts. purely technical.
